Lok Satta party condemns the abuse of government machinery in favour of ruling party in Yercaud by-elections.
In a complaint given by party treasurer Mr. Ashok Rajendran to the Election Commission of India, he has mentioned that the ADMK which is the ruling party in TN, seems to be abusing the government machinery to selectively give electric power to Salem district as it is contesting the bye-election to Yercaud constituency in that district. While there is upto 6 hours power cut in most districts except Chennai including the industrial districts of Coimbatore and Tiruppur, Salem has alone been exempted from power cuts, apparently due to the impending elections. This is clearly a gross abuse of power to save the ruling government from possible backlash that power cuts may cause in Yercaud or Salem district.
Mr. Ashok also has requested the Election commission to quickly investigate on what basis power cuts are enforced in TN to meet shortages, who ordered that power should not be cut for Salem and for what reasons. If there is a special reason for exemption to Salem, when before the same exemption was given to Salem alone. ECI should order immediate investigation and if any offense found, give exemplary punishment to the offenders. Also ECI should quickly ensure power cut is enforced in Salem district in a manner consistent with rest of TN without any undue favoritism to ensure level playing field to all the contestants in the elections.
