Media Release (10-December-2013):
Today is celebrated as ‘International Human Rights day’ throught the world. Safe guarding of Human Rights are of paramount importance in any civilized society.
The Human Rights commission has been the last resort of citizens upon whom injustice is meted out by the errant public servants who are part of the state machinery. It plays an important role in the investigation of extra judicial encounter killings, custodial deaths, riots etc.
It is a matter of concern that the Chairperson post of Tamil Nadu State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has been vacant for more than 2 years. The SHRC is becoming inefficient without a chairperson. At a time when Human Right activists call for a more independent Human Rights Commission, it is pathetic to see the Tamil Nadu government not even caring about the appointment of a chairperson.
The Lok Satta Party demands the chairperson post be filled at the earliest and the SHRC be made more independent and efficient in safeguarding Human Rights in the state.
