Lok Satta Party condemns the assault and the unlawful detention of RTI activist and Lok Satta Party’s Coimbatore district Spokesperson Mr. Manoj and Lok Satta Party leader Mr. Dhandapani.
Mr. Manoj is a Whistle blower and has unearthed several scams in government and private establishments and has solved several public issues using RTI as a tool. He has earned the wrath of corrupt politicians and bureaucrats because of this and has courageously continued to fight against corruption despite threats in the past.
Mr. Dhandapani is a well-known social activist and he is fondly called as ‘Shadow MLA’ for his public activities in his constituency.
Mr. Manoj and Mr. Dhandapani used to attend public grievances camps organized by the Coimbatore Corporation and raise questions about the scams in various projects and expose them to the general public. They attended one such camp on 17-Dec-2013 and have raised several items related to public welfare which has irked the councilors and Mayor. The Personal Assistant to the Coimbatore Corporation Mayor along with councilors attacked them in the corporation office in the presence of Mayor and Corporation Deputy Commissioner and no one came for their rescue. Mr. Manoj and Mr. Dhandapani were also arrested by the police and a false case has been imposed upon them.
The Mayor’s office has given misrepresented facts to the media only to defame Mr. Manoj and Mr. Dhandapani. They have been charged with impersonation as media persons and criminal intimidation. It is very obvious that the case is false foisted as there no need for a person to impersonate as a media person on a public grievance day where there is no entry restriction and no person in his right mind will intimidate the Mayor in his office in front of media and general public. The party will send separate request letters to those magazines and will demand that these defaming articles be retracted.
The Party condemns the Mayor’s office for furnishing false information to the media and for filing false case against such honest RTI activists.
The party requests the state government to enact strong laws to protect ‘Whistle blowers’ in the state. We request the police department to take action against them who assaulted Mr. Manoj and Mr. Dhandapani.
We request support from the Media, RTI activists and Human rights activists in this case to ensure justice be rendered to Mr. Manoj and Mr. Dhandapani.
