Protest wearing Anti-Dusk mask demanding the closure of RMC plant which is polluting the environment
Sunday, November 30th, 2014 @ 12:46PM
Loksatta Party along with the federation of Kottur resident’s federation organized a protest today demanding the closure of Ready Mix Concrete (RMC) unit in Kotturpuram, Chennai. The unit which is situated on the bank of Adyar river opposite to Kotturpuram MRTS railway station is creating air pollution by liberating enormous amount of cement dust that causes serious health problems not only to nearby residents, but also to the children studying in nearby schools and colleges. Hundreds of students from the nearby schools and colleges participated in the protest. Students wore Anti-Dusk masks to symbolically show the severity of the air pollution issue.
This RMC plant which was built as a temporary structure to build concrete walls to the Adyar river bank is now made permanent even though the original project is dropped. It is now supplying concrete to projects in other areas. As per CMDA norms, this is an OSR land which should be let open or should be used for public parks or other entertainment activities. However this plant continues to function without any approval from CMDA. Also this violates the Coastal Regulation Zone norms which mandates that no structure should be built within 100 meters from the banks of Adyar river.
Apart from the air pollution it causes the cement remains causes water pollution too in that area. Heavy vehicles carrying concrete load for this unit pass through the residential area Ellai Amman koil street adding to the trouble.
There is no prompt response to the petitions we sent to CMDA, pollution control board and CM cell leaving us no option other than to protest.
Loksatta Party along with the Kottur welfare federation demands that this troublesome plant be closed at the earliest.
