Loksatta Party has given a petition to the Perambalur district collector seeking action on arrest of RTI activist on false charges and the District Administration for denying peaceful democratic protest rights.
Mr. Kamalhassan has been arrested on charges of trying to prevent a government authority from performing his duty. This provision in law which is established to enable government officers to perform their duty efficiently is abused and used against social activists who find fault with the authorities.
It is to be noted that Police authorities refused to take the compliant of Mr. Kamalhassan when he gave the complaint against the government authorities. This attitude of taking complaints selectively in a biased manner is rampant in the state. This is debasing the faith in the Police department and alienating the general public from the police. The party recommends taking complaints through online. Though it is implemented in few police stations, it is observed that the complaints received through online are not taken seriously. Loksatta Party reiterates its demand of installing CCTV cameras in Police stations.
We request Media to support social activists in their crusade against atrocities. We also demand a detailed investigation and action should be taken on the concerned officials.
Since we understood it is a false case registered, we planned to conduct an agitation on Apr 25 (today) condemning the attack and arrest of RTI Activist. We sent the necessary permission letters to the Superintendent of Police and the Local station Police Inspector.
We were denied permission yesterday (Apr 24) as per the orders of Deputy Superintendent of Police. We also have come to know that any democratic protest in district of Perambalur is not permissible. It makes one think if 144 is permanently implemented in the district of Perambalur. The letter also talks about threat to peace in Perambalur by some militant groups and that was cited as one of the reason for denial. If such abnormal situations prevail and if the State government is unable to control the Law and Order situation in the district, we request the State government to raise the issue with the Central government and get us military or Central Reserved forces to protect Law & Order in Perambalur.
We are planning to take the legal route to get the permission for the protest planned. Loksatta will stand by all the RTI Activists and we will be the first voice against any such atrocities and false arrests.
PFA the permission denial letter from the police department and the pictures taken today.
